Nutrition Sector
Summary about the field in general.
Nutrition is one of the important sections which focuses on the most vulnerable groups for both sever and moderate malnutrition problems such as children, pregnant, and lactating women. Also Infant and young children feeding (IYCF) is an important part which focus on nursing mother’s nutrition and importance of breastfeeding to improve good infants and children feeding. It also pays great attention to educating pregnant and lactating mothers, as well as holding courses for health workers and volunteers.
Accordingly, the nutrition sector’s activities are considered as one of the humanitarian sectors that defined as any work leads to the provision of previous services or supports their existence, sustainability, continuity and development in such a way as to provide primary care and emergency nutrition services. The domains of nutrition interventions can be summarized as follow:
- Community management program for acute malnutrition of children under five years with severe or moderate acute malnutrition, and malnourished pregnant and lactating women.
- Programs providing health education for mothers / caregivers aged 0-23 months
- Blanket supplementary feeding program.
- Targeted supplementary feeding program.
- Provision of micronutrient supplements for girls and boys (6-24 months), not enrolled in community management of acute malnutrition or supplementary feeding program.
- Conduct assessment and analysis of health nutrition needs.
- Rehabilitation and capacity building for health staff
- Surveillance and information collection.
- Awareness-raising and education through the implementation of awareness campaigns (IYCF), health nutrition and awareness campaigns accompanying members of the community in dealing with cases of malnutrition.
Describe the implementation of field interventions and highlight the success that achieved.
There has been many efforts made by YDN in the nutrition sector and its activities by contributing in reducing the high rates of mortality and morbidity by improving the nutritional status of vulnerable groups (children aged 0-59 months and pregnant and lactating women) through treatment and prevention of acute malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.
YDN has an active partnership with the government sector, especially in the governorates of Taiz and Ibb where health and nutrition projects are implemented.
These projects fulfill the urgent needs for the community in Al-Kafar, Sabra, As Silw, Jabal Habashi and more districts, which are donated by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and UNICEF.
Significant efforts are still being made to reach out to other governorates to participate and contribute actively to the field through the following activities:
- Training community health volunteers, health workers and local authorities on various aspects of nutrition in emergencies.
- Screening of children aged 6-59 months and pregnant and lactating mothers.
- Treating severe acute malnutrition in children aged 0-59 months
- Treating moderate acute malnutrition in children aged 0-59 months
- Treating malnutrition in pregnant and lactating mothers.
- Referral of critical sever acute malnutrition cases to TFCs.
- Awareness raising and education through the implementation of awareness campaigns (IYCF), healthy nutrition and awareness sessions accompanying members of the community in dealing with cases of malnutrition.
- Provide iron supplements for pregnant and lactating women
